The Dissolving Landscape

Much of the Yorkshire Dales is associated with distinctive limestone landscapes, known collectively as Karst. However, due to the wide occurrence of the Carboniferous Yoredale limestones that are much thinner in occurrence (most are less than 20m thick), Swaledale does not include the type of scenery that is found in the limestone country further south such as the extensive karstic limestone pavements, and there are few potholes, caves and underground passages.
